Keep Colorado Springs Queer Open Mic Featuring Matthew Brown

Join Keep Colorado Springs Queer for an evening of queer art and community at July's queer open mic featuring acclaimed poet Matthew Brown!

Feature: Matthew L. Brown is a queer Afro-Latino author, entrepreneur, and multimedia artist from Albuquerque, New Mexico currently residing in Denver, Colorado. Matthew’s writing is an open soapbox that questions faith, addiction, mental health, love and forgiveness.

Open Mic: LGBTQIA2+ performers of all disciplines are welcome to perform on the open mic! If it can be performed into a microphone, we want to hear it. To sign up, add your name to the list at the event. Performers usually get an 8 minute window to perform, though this can vary depending on the list size.

In a time of algorithms, censorship, and shadow-banning this workshop seeks to bring back limitless possibility and joy to creating. Participants who have never even heard of a zine before will be captivated with the joy that comes with total creative freedom of expression — freedom that is at the heart of the zine medium!

Participants will come away with a mini-zine, as well as the knowledge on how to continue their zine-making journey. Materials provided.

They will also learn a method to craft persona poems to see the world from other points of view. Participants will be guided through a brainstorming stage, before writing and sharing their poems with the group. At the end of the workshop, participants will have written two poems.

About the Project and Event:

Join the UCCS Kraemer Family Library and MOSAIC & LGBTQ+ Resource Center for the unveiling event of the UCCS Club Q Memorial Artwork on Tuesday, 4/23/24. The reception begins at 5:30pm followed by programing from 6:00 to 8:00pm. We will gather to recognize the tragedy that struck the Colorado Springs LGBTQ+ community on the night of November 19th, 2022, while unveiling an exhibit that symbolizes a permanent recognition of the need for justice for the LGBTQ+ community. We encourage you to join us in memorializing the lives lost.

About the panel:

Join us to discuss the power and influence Queerness can have over your writing and creative process. We will have a panel of established writers and creatives from our community to discuss their process, and then hold individual workshops focusing on these different aspects and how to help your own writing journey.

Some of the panelists include local poet, performer, teaching artist, and organizer of the Keep Colorado Springs Queer open mic, Nico Wilkinson, and Alpha the Musical.

Intro to Linocut Printmaking at Ladyfingers Letterpress April 20+27

  • People brand new to printmaking — beginner/non-artist friendly!

  • Printmakers who want a refresher & some printin’ fun on the press

  • Anyone who wants to take a future intermediate workshop with us and access the letterpress to print

The Class

  • Learn about the tools and materials needed for this method of printing

  • Share print inspiration, favorite mark making tools, and provide other materials for printmaking

  • Practice the safe usage of carving tools and how to know when they need sharpening

  • Overview + print demonstration of how to use a letterpress to print

  • Introduction to methods of printing linocut that do not require a press (barren, stamping, and more) that can be used after the workshop at home or in your own studio
